Detaching Simplified: Just Let Them

Detaching is one of my 10 Relationship-Changing Principles. I promise people that if they learn to detach, it will set them free from being emotionally, mentally, and relationally tied to the things people do. Detaching can seem difficult to grasp. That is why I like this way of describing detaching in a simplified but powerful way--Just let them. Instead of controlling what people do; offering your unwanted opinions; and getting upset when they don't do what you want, you just let them. Watch this video to find out how to "just let them" and experience freedom.

Jealousy or grief? The sin of covetousness or pain? When you feel a pang of jealousy over seeing someone who has something that you are grieving over, is it the sin of covetousness or pain? Is it normal to feel jealousy when you are grieving a loss? People often feel guilty when they experience envy when it isn't envy at all. Watch the video to find out what this scriptural misunderstanding is all about.

A Reason Is Not an Excuse for Bad Behavior

A reason is not an excuse for bad behavior. When a person acts out or mistreats you, it is typical to ask why the person did it. You often search for a cause and then the confusion comes in and makes you wonder if it is okay to expect better behavior or set boundaries with consequences. This video explains why having a reason for bad behavior isn't an excuse for bad behavior.

Boundaries for me but not for thee. This Christian relationship advice video exposes the hypocrisy of people who tell you that you cannot have boundaries when they have them for themselves. Becoming clear about this double standard will strengthen your resolve to stand up for yourself and set healthy boundaries in your dysfunctional relationships. Don't let toxic people tell you that you cannot set boundaries when they do. Christians can and should have boundaries in their relationships.

This podcast is an interview by Jonathan Daugherty of Karla Downing on the important topic of how wives can detach with love in marriages to sex addicts or any other problem. Detachment sets wives free by helping them to focus on their own feelings, needs, thoughts, opinions, and perceptions while allowing their husbands to focus on theirs. This principle of detaching in love is absolutely necessary to overcome codependent enmeshment. Bucky was a covert emotional abuser toward his wife Annette, until he was forced to face the truth by a counselor who confronted him with what he was doing. Bucky describes the next three years as "hard work" when during a three-year separation from Annette he had to work on changing his abusive patterns. Annette founded The Mend Project to educate, equip, and restore those who are in abusive relationships and to train first-responders (https://themendproject.com).
