Abusive relationships have cycles. Things get better, then they escalate, and then they get bad. This crazy-making pattern adds to the confusion and self-doubt that is part of emotional, verbal, physical, spiritual, and other types of abuse.
The more you know about what is going on, the more you can be empowered to take care of yourself. The abuser has power over you by getting you to question your perceptions. Understanding the cycles allows you to make sense of the roller coaster and maintain your strong self as an abuse survivor.
Part of the abusive relationship cycle is pulling the rug out. Watch this video to identify this strategy used to throw you off balance.

Self-fulfilling prophecies are predictions that cause themselves to become true due to the behavior they generate. They affect your life and relationships in more ways than you realize. The common perception is that they come to pass whether you want them to or not.
It is important to consider how self-fulfilling prophecies are impacting your life. Once you do that, you can make simple changes to align them with what you choose for yourself and your relationships.
Change your self-fulfilling prophecies to change your life and relationships. It's a simple but powerful thing to do.

The dysfunctional family dynamics were caused by my toxic marriage. My husband insisted nothing was wrong except my reaction, so he refused to look at his behavior. I tried everything to get him to change: praying, nagging, lecturing, therapy (for me), adjusting, pleasing, and more. Nothing worked and the harder I tried, the more out of control I became.
I was the one the neighbors heard yelling. I was the one in support groups and marriage counseling. I was the losing my temper. I was the one getting physically sick. I was the one who looked unhappy and miserable. I was the one who looked crazy, not him. And it isn't just toxic marriages, but all toxic relationships where this can happen.
If this sounds like you, you need to watch this video to find out how to stop looking like the crazy one. I figured it out and so can you. Stop changing the other person, change yourself instead.

Difficult people cause crises that you think you have to fix. The healthier thing to do is to detach and let them deal with the consequences by themselves.

Emotional abusers have many tactics. They include ridicule, name-calling, minimizing, discounting, manipulation, threats, ordering, and withholding. There is another one that isn't typically mentioned, and yet it is equally painful to experience. It is making you irrelevant.
Each of us needs to be understood and validated. We also need to belong to groups and to have relationships where we matter. When people make you irrelevant, they withhold these basic things when you have an expectation that you should be included. When this is used to punish and control, it can be devastating.
Recognizing this tactic can help you to decrease its power. Watch this video to learn how to respond to the emotionally abusive tactic of making you irrelevant. #emotional abuse #christianrelationshipadvice #irrelevant #invalidation
